Plenary I: "The
Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in
Transportation: A Human–Centric Integration"
Speaker: Dimitrios Ziakkas, Purdue
University, USA
Summary:
Transportation, the backbone of global
connectivity, is undergoing a transformative
evolution driven by Artificial Intelligence
(AI). AI is reshaping how we move people and
goods from autonomous vehicles and drone
deliveries to intelligent traffic management
and predictive maintenance. However, the
implementation of AI in transportation must go
beyond technological advancement to prioritize
ethics and sustainability. This keynote
explores the critical role of integrating
people and intelligent systems in
transportation. By blending human intuition
with AI's analytical power, we can address
challenges like urban congestion and
environmental impact while upholding ethical
principles such as fairness, accountability,
and transparency. Sustainability remains
paramount, as AI solutions must contribute to
reducing carbon footprints, optimizing
resource usage, and ensuring equitable access
to smarter transportation systems. As we
embark on this dialogue, let us envision a
future where transportation systems harmonize
human ingenuity with AI intelligence,
fostering innovation that is ethical,
sustainable, and inclusive for all.

Why you should
attend this workshop: An incremental
but increasingly fast-paced revolution is taking
place in our complex world: AI capabilities of
machines and development speed are growing,
amplified with an even stronger push towards
sustainability. As in these progressively more
cooperative systems, humans, technical
co-systems, organizations, society and
environment all play their role to solve complex
scenarios, a structured and integrated design is
one of the keys to successful cooperation
between AI and humans.
Workshop Content: The workshop
includes an introduction to prototyping human-AI
systems to improve different system qualities.
It is divided into five parts, in which
participants receive theoretical input before
they work on the topic in groups and finally
present their results to the plenum. These five
steps are use case and storyboard preparation,
personas and user stories, system analysis and
modelling, exploration and design using the
theater method as well as implementation using
rapid prototyping techniques.
About the workshop Speakers:

(left) Michael Preutenborbeck began
his studies in industrial engineering in 2013 at
RWTH Aachen University and graduated with a
master's degree in 2020. Since 2020, he has been
working as a research associate and Ph.D.
candidate later on as research group lead at the
Institute of Industrial Engineering and
Ergonomics at RWTH Aachen University. His
research focus is on exploratory design methods
for interactive sociotechnical systems.
(right) Frank Flemisch, PhD is professor
for Human Systems Integration at the RWTH Aachen
University and branch head for balanced Human
Systems Integration at Fraunhofer. For more than
the past 30 years, Frank is a Human Systems
Integrator in the domains of aviation, highly
automated driving, industry 4.0 and defense
systems. He and his teams coined the terms
partially and highly automated driving,
cooperative systems and system exploration.
Participatory design has always been at the very
core of his research.
